Who doesn’t love a good DIY? Your plumber, that’s who!

Oftentimes, well-meaning property owners looking to save some money by doing DIY’s themselves end up with a worse problem on their hands. When it comes to plumbing, there are some projects that should always be left to a professional, unless you don’t mind an incidental fountain in the middle of your home. It goes without saying, most people don’t have the expertise it takes to handle the biggest plumbing problems a lot of homeowners have to face. Here are some of the plumbing jobs that should always be left to a professional.

Cleaning a Blocked Sewer Line

Why you should never try to handle this on your own is relatively self-explanatory, but we digress. If you have a clogged or blocked sewer line, don’t put on some gloves and hope everything will be alright. A sewer backup can be costly, to say the least, and a botched attempt to fix one could result in floods, water damage, damaged electrical systems and much more. Not to mention, all of the incurred damages will also be very smelly.

Fixing a Broken or Burst Pipe

Fountains are beautiful, when they’re on purpose. If you have a leaky pipe, that is a fine and good time to drag out the toolbox and try your hand at a DIY but a burst pipe is an emergency fix that should only be handled by someone trained to do the job. Pipe patches don’t work on burst pipes. Plus they are also just temporary fixes. Most burst pipes need to be replaced entirely.

Underground Plumbing Jobs

Maybe it’s a good rule of thumb to keep your shovel in the shed and your DIY’s away from your home’s infrastructure. There’s a lot more than pipes under your home and you don’t want to hit the wrong thing. The biggest reason why you should get a plumber for an underground plumbing job is because you will need a permit from the city to complete the work. If they find out you’ve been rooting around in your backyard trying to fix a pipe without a permit, you could be hit with penalty fees.

Installing Your Hot Water Heater

First of all, they are big and hard to carry. But that’s not the main reason you should hire a professional to replace your water heater. The golden rule for any good DIY’er is to leave any job that requires electrical work alone. A misstep replacing a water heater could result in serious injury or death, whereas a trained professional can manage the task while adhering to the utmost safety.
