We don’t know the value of something until we no longer have it. This is particularly true for clogged sinks in the kitchen or bathroom. Ever tried to wash dishes and the water just won’t drain? It’s a disaster. You’re in a rush for a meeting, the sink is full, and you can’t even wash your face or brush your teeth. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that.

Over time, strands of hair, build up of soap residue, and larger bits of debris can build up in the drain and create problems for the drainage process. In order to be preventative, it can be a smart move to fix the drain when you witness that water is leaving your sink much slower than usual. Otherwise, there are a few ways in which you can unclog your sink and some of these ways can quickly get you out of harm’s way:

Unclog with Boiling Water

There are various ways to unclog or fix a slow draining sink. It is wise to start off with household items such as pouring boiling water into the sink when the water has cleared up. This can help clear out the clogging immediately in some cases. Once you’re done pouring the boiling water, allow the water some time to drain.

Unclog with Baking Soda and Vinegar

Another way to fix a clogged drain through household items is by using baking soda and vinegar. Put ¼-cup of baking soda directly into the drain along with ¼-cup of vinegar and plug the drain with a sink stopper or towel so it can do its trick. After about 20 minutes, pour boiling water down the drain to let the magic happen.

Unclog with a Plunger

After removing the cover on your sink hole or the sink stopper, fill the sink with water so that it fills the drain by about an inch. Place the plunger over the drain and press down so that it seals the sink hole.  Then pump the plunger up and down for 15-30 seconds and remove it. You will see that the sink will become unclogged because of the water pressure created by the plunger.

Wet and Dry Vacuum

With very stubborn clogs, you can use a wet and dry vacuum to unclog a sink. Make a suction cup out of the top of a soda bottle or top of the plunger and attach it to the hose. Set your vacuum to the highest liquid setting and let it do its thing. The suction normally gets rid of whatever’s clogging your sink.

Still No Luck?

Sometimes, you just can’t resolve the problem on your own. That’s why there are experts out there that are trained for this kind of business. Unless you want to get underneath the sink and start unscrewing stuff and risking dirty debris-filled water spilling on your face, it’s best to ask for help when necessary.
